The family business takes its place on Upton Lane. Ted’s mechanical instinct and practical judgement become its foundation.
Full Cycle begins
At 95, Ted becomes the focus of a £44,400 National Lottery Heritage Fund project preserving his stories and Forest Gate’s cycling heritage.
Mechanically Minded
Frames of Mind preserves Ted’s extraordinary stories in a documentary, archive and eight-stop heritage trail.
Remembering Ted
Ted dies aged 97. His stories, humour and unique view of Forest Gate live on through his family, the workshop and the Full Cycle archive.

In memory of Ted
A lifetime of know-how.
Ted lived and worked in Newham for most of his life. From the shop floor he watched more than seventy years of social, cultural and mechanical change. He worked until March 2025, aged 97, alongside his sons Antony and Martin and grandson Tyler.

Remembering Ted.
Edward Ernest Etty was a mechanic, storyteller, father, grandfather and Forest Gate original. This gallery preserves real photographs of the man behind the workshop.

Ted’s dedication to Etty & Tyler was immense. Customers remember his knowledge, humour and generosity; his family remembers the man who kept working, thinking and helping. His stories now live in the Full Cycle archive, the film Mechanically Minded, the heritage trail, and every conversation still held at the shop.

Martin Etty
Martin Andrew Etty, aged 58, is one of Ted’s sons. He recalled that he and his brother started working in the shop when they were children, learning inside the family business from an early age.
Martin worked alongside Ted at Etty & Tyler through March 2025. He also spoke publicly about the importance of documenting his father’s life and memories through the Full Cycle project and Mechanically Minded film.
Companies House records Martin as an active director of Etty & Tyler Limited, appointed in April 2000.
Antony Etty
Antony David Etty, aged 65, is one of Ted’s sons and Martin’s brother. Newham Voices records that Antony worked alongside Ted, Martin and Ted’s grandson Tyler at the family workshop through March 2025.
Companies House records Antony as an active director of Etty & Tyler Limited, appointed in April 2000—evidence of his long-standing role in the family company.
